ICE TREK CHADAR) |
BEST TIME : Mid Jan Till Mid March
WALK ON THE FROZEN RIVER , A LIFE TIME EXPERIENCE
Even for a seasoned adventure tourists, trekking on ice is an experience, which can extremely challenging yet satisfying. India offers an exciting tour named ICE TREK for those raring to walk the wild side. Undertaken every year in the month of January, February and March when the river Zanskar in the Ladakh region freezes, this two weeks trek start from Padum, district headquarters of Zanskar. One just has to have full insurance done for evacuation and be able to navigate narrow passages.
The region is cut off for six months for the year due to heavy snowfall. The two river - the Doda and the Tsarap Lingti Chu, converge at Padum and from the confluence, it is known as the river Zanskar. The delightful village of Padum forms the source of river Zanskar which merges into the river Indus after 120 kilometers at Nimu, near Leh. In the heart of winter, the river freezes to become the only source of travel for the Zanskaris into Ladakh. This passage is an amazing winter trekking experience. The route is the last link to the silk route and the Zanskaries have been using it to take their goods to Leh for selling.
The trek not only provides adventure but also an eco-friendly product. For eco-tourism means responsible travel to natural area that conserve the environment and sustains the well-being of the local people. The expedition helps the villagers earn money during winter months, working as porters, guides and lodgers as the trekkers stay with them. Even if we try to provide eatables but still we have to rely on the local food provided by the locals. They also bring back empty tin canes, cartons and other garbage accumulated during the trip.
The experience of walking along the frozen Zanskar is unique and could surely be referred to as a "natural wonder of the world". Each spectacular scene is surpassed by an even more spectacular scene. Deep in the desolate region of Zanskar, the city gorges, the changing hues and the towering peaks, present an awe-inspiring sight-tinged with just the right dose of Adventure. This can be extremely satisfying journey for adventure and natural lovers.
