Along the right bank of bhagirathi stands the shrine of Gangotri dedicated to the Goddess. Perched at a height of 3042m; it was constructed in the early 18th century by a Gorkha Commander, Amar Singh Thapa. Now it's a famous pilgrimage center. The picturesque pilgrimage in the hinter lands of the Himalayas. From Gangotri the trek takes you to 'Gaumukh' (translates to cows mouth), the mythological source of the river Ganges, which is at the snout of the Gangotri glacier. The Gaumukh Glacier is the source of Bhagirathi (Ganga) and is held in high esteem by the devouts who do no miss the opportunity to have a holy dip in the bone chilling icy water. It is 18 kms from Gangotri. This trek combines the experience of mountain climbing, rock climbing, boulder-hopping and glacier traversing. The trek is not a very rigorous one and is easily negotiable by non mountaineers too. From Gangotri the trail move along the beaten track towards Chirbasa, which offers a clear view of the Bhagirathi Peak. Beyond Chirbasa the terrain becomes really desolate - in fact, many trekkers refer to it as the "Arctic Tundra". From Chirbasa it's on to Bhojwasa. Gaumukh, the source of the sacred river Ganges, is just four kilometers ahead. From Gaumukh to Nandanvan, one traverses along the Gangotri and Chatturangini glaciers. Pitch a camp at the junction of chatturangini and Bhagirathi gangotri glaciers. From Nandanvan, view the Shivling, Bhagirathi, Sudarshana, thelu peaks and Kedar Dome. From Gaumukh to Tapovan the ascent is steep before arriving at the lush green meadows of tapovan,. It is an alpine meadow nestling in the shadow of the Bhagirathi peaks. From here, the Shivlinga Peak looks like an ice-cream cone rising towards the sky.
There are ideal spots for camping which are also base camps for Bhagirathi, Shivling, Meru, Kedardom and many other peaks the Garhwal Himalayas.

The trek from Gomukh to Tapovan is ascent steep, and as we climb, the view of the surrounding peaks become clearer. The appear to be just a stone's throw away. Tapovan known for its beautiful meadows that encircle the base camp of the Shivling peak, Tapovan is a very pleasant surprised spot with a large meadow complete with bubbling streams, wildflowers and campsides. Herds of Bharal (blue mountain goats) is a common sight from here on mountain ridges. On the far side of the glacier the Bhagarithi I ,II , III (6454mt), provide an equally impressive backdrop. It is also the little wonder where Sadhus and saints choose this spot for extended medition during the long summer month. Arrive Tapovan and camp. Dinner and overnight camp.

It is said that there is similarity between the Shivling and the Matterhorn peak in the Alps. Foreigners frequently use the name Matterhorn for Shivling. Marco Pallis wrote of Shivling :
"….Horried looking mountain with a striking resemblance to the Mattherhorn… beautiful alluring, hideously inaccessible. "

From Gomukh turn towards Nandanvan (4340m) and steering on right one will be on top of the Gangotri glacier. The glacier runs between two ranges and the landslides make a layer of rockey moraine on the ice which makes the walking easier. The glacier walk is very slippery and a slight lack of concentration would be dangerous. Huge crevasses gaped here and there. After a walking for about a kilometer there is a vertical ascent. Big rocks enroute offer grips and foot - holds but many of them are deceptive too. O/N Camp.
