Nanda Devi Classic

Badrinath & the Valley of Flowers  Kuari Pass    Khero Valley    Chenap Bughyal   7 others...

Nanda Devi Sanctuary    Panch Kedar    Roopkund    and others...

This classic trek retraces the pioneering steps of Shipton and Tilman through the Garhwal Himalaya.

It takes us across the picturesque meadows and valleys that border the western edge

of the Nanda Devi Sanctuary.

During the trek there are many views of the surrounding peaks

and the Kuari Pass (3658m) itself has an unrivalled panorama of the Great Himalayan peaks

including Nanda Devi (7816m), Changabang (6864m), Dronagiri (7066m) and Kamet (7756m).

The immediate landscape has been beautifully tamed by centuries of low-key habitation and cultivation

but the constant backdrop of the mighty Himalayan peaks makes for a magnificence

unrivalled elsewhere in the region.

The route:

Day 01: Rishikesh / Joshimath - Mundoli (264 km), 1350 m.

We follow the gently winding road into the heart of the Garwhal foothills,

pass Rudraprayag with its memorial stone to Jim Corbett and the famous man eating leopard

and we go up to the Pindar valley. We camp above the road-head near Mundoli.

Day 02: Mundoli - Wan (13 km), duration 5 / 6 hours, 2130 m.

An excellent start to the journey through rhododendrons forest, hand-tilled fields and small friendly villages.

We camp near an old Forest Rest House with impressively large deodars.

Day 03: Wan – Nanda Ghunti , (12 km), duration 6 / 7 hours, 3524 m.

A long climb to the magnificent bugyal or grazing meadow of Bedni.

Here we can discover the views of the Trishul (7120m)

and the Nanda Ghunti (6390m). A tough day of steep ascents and descents. Overnight in camp.

Day 04: Nanda Ghunti - Kanol, (10 km), duration 6 / 7 hours, 2086 m.

Classic walk as we head north for rolling meadows bordered with ancient rhododendron trees

which give the most wonderful display of colours in spring. The trails are good and the scenery magnificent.

We camp near a river beside the village of Kanol.

Day 05: Kanol – Nandakini Valley (13 km), duration 6 / 7 hours, 2200m.

We start the day by trekking up and out of the Nandakini valley, a tough climb along good trails.

Birds of prey such as Lammergeyer, Golden Eagle and Himalayan Griffon are common in this area.

Camp in a peaceful and wonderful meadow for the night.

Day 06: Nandakini Valley – Nanda Devi (Semkharak) (12 km), duration 7 / 8 hours, 2060 m.

A day traversing one of the main valleys near the Inner Sanctuary of the Nanda Devi.

A steep descent to our campsite above the gorge of the Bharagithi.

Day 07: Nanda Devi - Pana (14 km), duration 7 / 8 hours, 2448 m.

We cross the river on a splendid suspension bridge. Shipton and Tilman were not so fortunate

and had to improvise a crossing out of fallen trees, trunks and ropes.

From the river we climb steeply to a level trail to the next camp, in sight of the Kuari Pass.

Day 8 : Pana - Dhakwani (15 km ), duration 8 / 9 hours, 3668 m.

An easier day: we camp at Dhakwani near the base of the Kuaripass

in preparation for an early start the next day.

Day 09: KUARI PASS, 3658m.
We make a pre-dawn start for the pass to gain the best views.

We follow the zigzag path to the top of the pass.

The route is not difficult and the views that unfold at the top are unrivalled anywhere in the Himalayas.

A stunning panorama of snow covered 6000 and 7000m peaks stretches as far as the eye can see.

After savouring this moment we descend to a sheltered grazing meadow

to watch the peaks fade into the twilight. Overnight in camp.

Day 10: Kuari Pass - Joshimath, duration 8 / 9 hours, 1871m.

The final day of our classic trek. We descend further the Alaknanda valley and the small settlement

of Tapovan where we meet our transport to Joshimath,

the important halting point for Shipton and Tilman during their explorations...
